But what about the hay your horse eats? Experts say a 1000 pound horse should eat between 15 - 30 lbs. of forage per day. Some hay can have more sugars or starches than a sensitive horse should have. The only way to know if your hay contains the types of sugars or starches that may affect your horse is to have it tested by a reputable lab. Ask your vet or equine nutritionist or local extension office for a referral to a good lab.
